After "butterbiking" 10,201 miles with the monarch butterflies, Sara finished her fourth Beyond a Book adventure. Order her book, Bicycling with Butterflies, today!

"An extraordinary story in which Dykman seamlessly weaves together science, a real love of nature and the adventure and hazards of biking with butterflies from Mexico to Canada and back." —Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute & U.N. Messenger of Peace

Butterbike has also morphed into a research project in Mexico.

Counting Monarchs:

  1. Is the first ever research focused on monarch streaming behavior.

  2. Affords women in Mexico the opportunity to be scientists and thus create an even stronger bond with their monarch neighbors.

  3. Creates a sustainable economy, in which women get paid to be scientists. This cuts down on the need for extractive jobs and creates incentives to protect the monarchs.

  4. Builds a data set that can more accurately track the migration timeline and how climate change is affecting monarch behavior in Mexico.

More about Butterbike

The Migration

The monarch migration is a multi-generational, multinational migration sure to be one of the World's greatest natural wonders.

The Bicycle Adventure

From March to December 2017, Sara followed the monarch butterflies from their overwintering grounds in central Mexico to Canada and back. Her trip became a spotlight to remind us that it is up to us to save the migration.

The Education Link

Sara, the ButterBiker, visited over 50 schools and nature centers, showing over 9,000 students that anyone can be a scientist, conservationist, and adventurer.
