Celebrating Firsts

by Tommy Viducich

Things Are Moving! Firsts fly by.

Now that 3/4ths of the bike49 crew are unemployed college graduates, the planning of bike49 has launched into full effect. Whoo Hooo! When we conceived this idea almost two years ago, the realities of a 14 month, 15,000 mile bicycle journey were far off. We are beginning to realize how big/amazing/daunting this bicycle ride is going to be, and we couldn’t be more excited!

Bike49 has had a lot of “firsts” in the last 2 months. We received support from our first sponsor (and then a second), both excellent gear companies: Showers Pass (bicycling specific rain gear) and Swift Industries (handcrafted panniers and accessories). We have also received generous contributions from Capital Graphics and Inprintz. We had our first online donation to the “The food/camping/bike repair fund”. We have had our first international hit (France) on our website, not to mention hits from all over the country. We have begun to line up classes all over the country to speak with. Basically, things are moving!

We are less than 4 MONTHS away from the grand kick off and there is so much to do. Bike49’s big goal right now is to get the word out and get people excited about bicycling. To all who are reading this now: tell everyone you know about bike49. Our website is now fully functional and we have a Facebook page and an email list. We would love to hear from you as well. Tell us what you think of bike49; let us know if we can crash on your couch when we roll through; and if you know of any teachers and classes we can present to. Bike49 is going to be awesome and we want as many people as possible to be involved in it. Thanks to everyone that has made bike49’s first successes great. Keep on riding.
